Perplexity built and runs its own index, which makes it behave unlike the others — and makes it the single most winnable engine if you're a small business.
Three numbers explain why:
- ~80% of what Perplexity cites is not in Google's top results. Domain authority matters far less here.
- It hands out 20+ citation slots per answer, where ChatGPT might use three.
- Freshness is weighted heavily. A well-maintained recent page beats a better stale one.
You don't need a decade-old domain. You need specific, current detail nobody else has bothered to write down.
What Perplexity actually rewards
It leans toward user-generated content, forums, Reddit threads, and small niche sites carrying granular specifics that big encyclopedic domains never cover.
Which is fortunate, because that material is exactly what an operating business knows and almost never publishes:
- Real local price ranges — and what moves them up or down
- What your regional climate does to your equipment
- Honest comparisons between two options, with a recommendation
- Failure modes: warning signs, what to do before help arrives, what not to touch
- Anything containing a number, a date, or a place name
Generic content loses here badly. "We provide quality service" is unciteable. "Torsion springs in Oklahoma's temperature swings typically last 7–9 years, about 10,000 cycles" is exactly the kind of sentence Perplexity pulls.
Freshness is a real ranking signal
This is the biggest behavioral difference from Google, and it changes your publishing rhythm.
- Put visible
Last updateddates on pages, and make them true - Revisit price and timeline content when reality changes — quarterly is a reasonable floor
- Publish on a steady cadence rather than in one big burst then silence
- Update existing pages rather than only adding new ones; a refreshed page can re-enter the pool
A page updated last month genuinely can outrank a more thorough page from 2023.
Let PerplexityBot in
Perplexity crawls with PerplexityBot. If your robots.txt blocks it, you are invisible to Perplexity regardless of content quality.
Check yoursite.com/robots.txt for any rule disallowing it, and make sure a broad catch-all rule isn't quietly sweeping it up. See which AI crawlers to allow for a full configuration.
Why winning Perplexity doesn't win the others
Across an analysis of 680 million citations, only 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT were also cited by Perplexity. Almost no overlap.
That's worth internalizing: Perplexity success is real traffic and real conversions, but it doesn't transfer. ChatGPT still needs Bing indexing, Claude still needs Brave, Gemini still needs Google rankings. Treat them as four separate surfaces that happen to share content.
Realistic timeline
The fastest of the four. Because Perplexity weights freshness and doesn't gate on domain authority, new content can start getting cited in days to a few weeks rather than months.
If you need early proof that this work does anything, Perplexity is usually where it shows up first.
Sitting on expertise you've never published? That's the raw material, and turning it into citable content is most of what we do. Book a strategy call — the first four from the site are free.
